In Praise of those Who Push Us Forward

​If you haven’t seen the Netflix documentary on *Arnold Schwarzenegger, it’s worth watching.
​ I did not know much about the famous actor. Actually, I stopped paying attention to him after his divorce from Maria Shriver, who I admire. Maybe a celebrity’s personal business is their business, but that’s a discussion for another time. Hearing about Schwarzenegger’s early life in Austria and his ambition to succeed was inspiring. He recalled his early days in the U.S. when he arrived with $20 in his pocket and “some sweaty clothes in a gym bag.” Arnold knew exactly what he wanted, remained focused,  and worked his ass off.  When complimented for being a self made man he vehemently disagreed, stating, “ I didn't make it that far on my own. I mean, to accept that credit or that medal, would discount every single person that has helped me get here today, that gave me advice, that made an effort, that lifted me up when I fell,” he added. “The whole concept of the self‑made man or woman is a myth.”
I couldn’t agree more.  

​Making art and the business of art are two entirely different things. Behind the scenes, there are hours of work and oftentimes, things not working out at all.  Looking from the outside, you just see posts and promotions about what is going right, all of which are hard earned. More importantly, moving forward would not have happened without those who supported me along the way.

​My biggest fans are my family. My amazing friends have shown up for my art events, big and small. Girlfriends have grabbed the snacks and readily road tripped with me to deliver artwork to galleries in other states. Coworkers have purchased tote bags and calendars and shared them with friends. I have been supported by local artists, art galleries and organizations with exhibitions and grants, and I don’t take their sponsorship lightly. Many artists do not get such opportunities. I am appreciative and humbled, because all of these things are what love looks like to an artist.
In addition, I have  benefitted from the talented teachers
I have taken workshops with. They have helped me to continue evolving as a painter:  Dietlind Vander Schaaf, Lorraine Glessner, Jeffrey Hirst and Mark Eanes. Artists who generously share their knowledge and push others forward are truly a blessing. 

The most unexpected gift from putting myself out there as a full time artist has been the support of other creatives. I have found a tribe of people who are passionate about creative expression. They freely share art tips, methods, successes and struggles. The connections I have made,
in person and through social media, keep me going when I am discouraged. 
In a world full of competition and haters, visionary people love to see each other succeeding. We know that every artist has a unique gift to share.  I am fortunate to have an upcoming exhibition with many of them on May 15th through September 1 at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg, PA.
Self made? No way. Hard work, a bit of luck and a community of support have pushed me forward. And If you are reading this, I am talking about YOU. Thank you! 
My hands are dirty and my heart is full.
